A spirit distilled from various products of the sugar-cane (esp. molasses and dunder); is prepared chiefly of the West Indies and Guyana. The name has also been improperly applied to all spirits made in imitation of this from beet-roots or other materials." Furthermore, it goes on to cite references to the use of the name, beginning in 1654, as an alternative to the name Kill-Devil

Cadenhead's 'Green Label' 10 yr. old
(Jamaica, 92 proof)
"Almost subtle in its approach. Very herbal with hints of sweet grass, chive and even a bit of mint. Sweet and tart fruits marry well, creating a complex and styled drink"

El Dorado 'Superior Demerara' 12 yr. old
(Guyana, 80 proof)
"Rich, lush and sweet with toffee and brown sugar notes. Velvety texture with enough drying components (cigar, leather and oak) to keep it all in balance. Nice to sip, but it makes a darn good cocktail"

MOVED TO GENERAL RUM

English harbour Vintage 1981
(Antigua, 85 proof)
" However, my true star of the tasting was from Antigua, English Harbour Antigua Rum 1981 Vintage, which had a deep rich caramel colour, was extremely aromatic with nut-like flavors, smooth finish and mouth-filling flavor. Unfortunately, they only produce limited amounts (about 50 cases per year, around $100/bottle) so you would be lucky indeed to find a bottle or two to savour over cold winter nights" (Ed Hamilton)

Havana Club Barrel Strength
(Cuba 95.4 proof)
"Pale amber colour. Smoky, fruit pie, toasted pecan, and spice aromas. A round, buoyant entry leads to a dryish medium-to full-bodied palate with dark caramel, dried autumn fruit, sweet tobacco, apple cider, cane juice, charred wood, and peppery brown spices. Finishes with a long fade of smoky wood spice, exotic peppercorns, and caramelized fruit. Remarkably flavourful and balanced. Try with a touch of spring water." (Tastings.com)

Coronation Khukri XXX
(Nepal)
GIVEN BY DC BULL FROM HONG KONG
"Brilliant mahogany colour. Sweet, buttery, dark caramel, roasted nut, and floral banana aromas are attractive. A round entry leads to a soft, dryish medium-bodied palate with nutty toffee, dried tropical fruit, slight rubberiness, and sweet brown spices. Finishes with a tongue-numbing wave of heat and wood spice. A hearty dark rum with a fine nose, dry woody flavour, and a healthy dose of fire—cool with a little water." (Tastings.com)
COMEMORATIVE BOTTLE THAT EVERYONE MISSES AT THE TOP OF THE SHELF

Myers Legend 10 year Old
(Jamaica)
"Myer's Legend can be largely defined by what it is not - it's not overly heavy or sharp. It's not bitter or complex. But it is dark, and it is rum. It's a dark rum, free of pretense or distraction. This pure simplicity makes it a treat, but one that's best enjoyed in moderation. Not only would it get boring as a staple rum, but I also found it a little too anxious at inducing hangovers - even two small glasses left me with a lightly nauseous headache the following morning. That said, when you've been cruising through the world of rums for some time, experiencing everything from the complex to the exotic to the downright deadly, a glass of Myer's Legend Rum can be a delightfully centering experience, reminding you of what rum - beneath all the subtleties - should be."

Havana Club San Cristobal
(Cuba)
A Havana Club Special Edition label, which is only sold in the official store of the Havana Club Foundation Distillery. Havana Club rum Solera San Cristóbal was created for the grand celebration of the 480th Anniversary of the Villa San Cristóbal Foundation of the city of Havana.

10 Cane Rum
(Trinidad)
GIVEN BY JACQUES BEZUIDENHOUT (SAN FRANCISCO)
10 Cane is a luxury rum created from the first pressing of virgin Trinidadian sugar cane, not molasses. 10 Cane is crafted by experts at Moet Hennessy, the world's premier luxury spirits producer.
10 Cane is created from the first pressing of a specially grown sugar cane. The remaining cane is then discarded. Distillation takes place in Trinidad using French pot stills. The spirit is then aged in French oak "just the right amount of time."

Clement Rhum vieux XO
(Martinique)
" while Clement XO is wickedly rich but well balanced. "

Oronoco Rum

"Oronoco Rum, the first ever super-premium white rum made from fresh cut Brazilian mountain cane. The naturally smooth spirit is available this fall in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Oronoco is a product of renowned cachaca makers Vicente and Roberto Bastos Ribeiro's passion for creating high quality distillates. "Like coffee and wine grown on mountain slopes, we believe that mountain cane yields a superior taste," said Vicente Bastos Ribeiro, Oronoco Master Distiller. "The mountain terroir produces a complex and flavorful cane that is the secret to our taste profile." The cane is harvested by hand and crushed within hours of cutting. The resulting fresh cut mountain cane juice is the heart of Oronoco Rum.
Fazenda Soledade -- the home of Oronoco -- is located on the lush mountain slopes of Novo Friburgo in the highlands of Rio de Janeiro state. Known typically for its cachacas, Brazil played a key role in creating rum as we know it today with its native crop sugar cane -- one of the most valuable commodities of the 17th century.
In the early 1600s, the Dutch occupied the Northeast of Brazil to control sugar cane production until being forced out by the Portuguese in 1654. The Dutch then brought the sugar cane plant and their acquired expertise in sugar cane distillation to the Caribbean, giving birth to the modern rum industry. The Bastos Ribeiro's brothers have brought this story full circle with Oronoco Rum.
Recipient of a gold medal at the 2005 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Oronoco Rum offers light hints of vanilla on the nose, a crisp, clean taste and a smooth rounded finish.
