Rum, in some crude form, appears to have been developed either in ancient India or China; its precise origins are uncertain. What is known is that Persians of the Middle Ages distilled sugarcane juice into alcohol. Marco Polo, in his 14th-century memoirs, mentioned the “very good wine of sugar” that he was offered in what is now Iran.
