So it is unfortunately that time of year again when all our favourite bars get filled with office Christmas parties and our credit cards get some serious abuse… but we hope to help in our small rum induced way…
The next official meeting of the Notting Hill Rum Club is a one off Tiki Xmas party… and you had better not miss it. There has been a lot of talk of Tiki recently (see the next Diffords Guide for a what/where/why of Modern Tiki) but it seems to stop at the bar for many people.. either people use the imagery of Tiki or they put Tiki drinks on a list but we at the Notting Hill Rum Club believe great Tiki is a fusion of both so we thought we would use the cool Yule as an excuse to show off what we think Modern Tiki is all about…
So we first got Jamie Wilson, aka Cheeky Tiki, the UK’s foremost Tiki Carver and generally all round tiki kind of guy and asked him to set up a Trading Post to sell his BritTiki ceramic mugs and a host of other good stuff to make Christmas day either memorable for downright hazy… 18oz of good time. He will also be spouting Tiki talk for all that want to hear how Tiki swept the world from Hollywood to Butlins
We also asked him to design a new set of Tiki Shot Shelves so that we can get back to selling the Tiki shot glasses we love (and we have a new set of shots coming so bring your tenners and get on (the) board)
Next we were lucky to secure the services of legendary (old school) DJ (and closet Tiki freak) Jay Strongman to spin some Exotica and Tiki faves…Then we decided that every good Xmas party needs some embarrassing dancing and consumption of illicit substances so we have hired a lovely dusky Island maiden to perform the Kava Ceremony (don’t know what that is? Ooh… you are in for a treat!)
To let those extroverts amongst us get into the action we decided to make it Tropical and Tiki dress and will be awarding prizes for all who don their Aloha shirts and straw hats including a Tiki for the Best in Bar… but we will be making sure everyone gets lei’ed so panic not!
Next as it’s the spirit of giving we needed some good spirits to give away and those fine folks at Appleton and Havana Club, ardent supporters of the NHRC have done us proud so there will be free libations to allow you to buy more Mugs from Cheeky Tiki… but knowing you lot it’s a matter of get there early to avoid the rush…
Finally Jules will show off his amazing Christmas Rum Punch mix… most recently seen at the Woods 100 shenanigans…and chef Cedric will PuPu you all (that’s Hawaiian snacks to you)
So if you haven’t made it down to Rum Club yet (Mr Reed? Mr Difford.. we see you lurking o famous drinkers...) or are a regular stalwart (over 200 members now) then this is one not to miss… one where we talk Tiki not turkey, drink fine rums and get all rummed up. As this one is a special one we would again like you to rsvp to julien@trailerh.com and we look forward to doing some serious damage sugar cane juice in all its lovely forms…
We should big up the Whisky Club, the brain child of rummy Xavier P and occurring down at Albannach in Trafalgar Square on Mondays when Rum Club isn’t on and we hear that those ardent rum drinkers and Tiki Gods the WorldWideCocktail Club will be launching a Tequila Club at Green and Red shortly to punish that evil organ that is the liver...
So we all look forward to seeing you and chums on the 5th December at Trailer Happiness, 177 Portobello Road, from 6pm but the Xmas fun starting at 8... be there or be boringly sober and straight...
irie (and thank you all for showing that the popularity of rum is more than just an article in a trade magazine... did we mention that Trailer won Best Bar at the Class awards a few mondays ago??)
